As the fall semester begins, the questions, “How was your summer? What did you do?” seem to be asked all the time. For Laura, a University of Delaware senior Mechanical Engineering major, her summer consisted of an internship with Dow Electronic Materials.

Check out our interview with her to learn more about what she did and the projects she worked on!

Major:

Mechanical Engineering mechanicalengineer

Expected Year of Graduation:

Spring 2014

Where did you intern?

Dow Electronic Materials

What were your responsibilities as an intern?

My main project consisted of designing a tension control system for a felt-based material laminator.  I worked with a team of engineers, equipment operators, maintenance personnel, and Environmental Health & Safety representatives to ensure that the system satisfied all standards.

What was your favorite thing about your internship?

I really enjoyed working in a manufacturing facility–the environment was fast-paced and dynamic.  Every day was a challenge!

What was the most valuable skill you developed that you could use in your future career?

Lean Six Sigma tools for improving product quality and reducing defects

What was something unexpected that happened during or came out of your internship experience?

One day, the laminator that I was working on broke down.  It was very exciting to work with engineers and equipment experts to help pinpoint the problem and determine a solution, all while racing the clock.

Any words of wisdom for other students that may be interested in pursuing this or a similar internship?

I can’t think of anything…sorry!

Any additional words of career wisdom that you would like to share?
