#UDreamItDoIt: Part-time athlete and Communication student interns at Student Media Group

Kelsey McKee, a senior mass communication major, plays field hockey at the University of Delaware. This summer, Kelsey interned with the Student Media Group as an advertising and marketing intern. Check out our interview with her below!

Sport you play at UD: Field hockey

Major: Mass Communication

Expected Year of Graduation: 2015

Where did you intern? Student Media Group

How did you hear about your internship? Briefly explain the interview process, as well.

I went through UD Career Services Center and received an email that an internship opportunity was available in my field and attended an interest meeting.

What were a few of your responsibilities as an intern? smg

I was asked to go into the field and try and sell advertisement space to companies around Newark for a yearly planner that our company hands out for free to students every year.

What was your favorite thing (or something unexpected) that happened during your internship?

I met a lot of people from UD who I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet during regular school times.

As a student athlete, what is one thing you can take away from your internship and apply to your classes and/or in your sport here at the University of Delaware?

Nothing worth having comes easy. With sales, it’s a hit or miss and some days are more successful than others. This is really applicable to sports, school, and life in general. Some days, it was hard to get motivated, but I knew that my company and coworkers were counting on me to perform, similar to how my teammates count on me in field hockey.

Any words of wisdom for other students who may be interested in pursuing this or a similar internship?

Make sure you know what you’re getting into. Sales isn’t for everyone. It’s a very tedious job and you have to get used to being rejected frequently. It really teaches you how to get up and brush yourself off.

Any additional words of career wisdom that you would like to share?

Do your research before you accept a job!
