Where are you interning/did you intern?
GAM Information Systems Inc. and SRH Accounting Services, LLC
What are/were your responsibilities as an intern?
For SRH Accounting, I was responsible for scanning and organizing documents on Google Drive, helping to prepare, organize, and proof-read Tax Returns and Financial Statements. I also developed and used excel templates for customer financial analysis of current and prior financial years.
For GAM I helped keep records of business sales and transactions including invoices, vendor bills, accounts receivables, accounts payables, and cash flow tracking using QuickBooks Pro 2014 & 2017. I was able to reconcile vendor invoices to match individual sales person’s orders, monthly corporate bank statements, and sales persons’ commission statements
Worked with corporate network engineers on site for installations of various personal computers, firewalls, servers, network configurations, and help manage the needs of various clients
Describe a typical day at your internship.
With GAM I’d typically gather the vendor orders from sales reps, then invoice the sales to customers with QuickBooks. By noon I’d check the mail and gather vendor bills and help pay those. Different days saw me doing other jobs like on site IT work, sitting in on sales meetings, and monthly reconciliations.
For SRH Accounting, I start a typical day by organizing and scanning documents into Google Drive. Afterwards I proofread and help organize financial and tax documents that CPAs have prepared. One of my major tasks while working there was to develop excel sheets that created various financial analysis of customers. I measured changes in balance sheets and income statements from prior years of customers.
What is/was your favorite thing about your internship?
The internships allowed me to network with a ton of different people in the business. While it gave me a ton of experience, I most enjoyed working with my colleagues and learning from them.
What is/was the most valuable skill you developed in this internship that you can use in your future career?
What was something unexpected that happened during your internship, or resulted because of your internship?
I’ve networked with companies that have given me possible future internship and job opportunities.
What advice or words of wisdom can you share for other students who may be interested in pursuing this internship, or a similar one?
Keep reaching out to people. Employers like to see students or young adults who are hungry to gain experience or work. These people are busy and reaching out two or three times to remind them of you is a good thing
How did you grow as a future professional in this field?
Nothing beats real world experience, from meeting with customers, to working hands on with members of the office, I learned how modern businesses run.
