#UDIntern: QVC Broadcast Television Network

Avery Beer is an Interpersonal Communications major and is expected to graduate in Spring 2019.

Where are you interning/did you intern? QVC

What are/were your responsibilities as an intern?

The position I held was an Affiliate Marketing Intern. Affiliate Marketing is essentially marketing through another channel so we would work with publisher websites/apps to publish deals and events going on at QVC. In doing this, the goal is that we would drive sales back to QVC’s website. My responsibilities were things such as writing copy for our affiliate newsletter to send out to publishers, performing daily audits for publisher websites (such as Ebates, RetailMeNot, etc.), checking items on the QVC website for Best-of-Web, and more. Each day was different but those were my routine tasks!

Describe a typical day at your internship.

There really is no typical day at QVC! It’s such a fun, fast-paced, energetic atmosphere. As I mentioned, I did have some of the same routine duties each day, but there were also a ton of other interns. We would have professional development workshops, team-building workshops, and we had a summer-long intern project that we were working on as well. Each day was pretty different!

What is/was your favorite thing about your internship?

My favorite thing about my internship was learning about all different fields. QVC is a great place to intern because they offer so much opportunity to really experience all different departments through “walk-a-miles” and “lunch and learns” which I took full advantage of as an intern. It was an incredible, unique experience because I not only learned about Affiliate Marketing where I was an intern, but also so many other areas of the company that I probably never would have learned about otherwise, such as Diversity & Inclusion, Buying/Planning, and even E-commerce.

What is/was the most valuable skill you developed in this internship that you can use in your future career?

This is a really tough question because I took away so much from this experience. I furthered my interpersonal skills, I learned how to collaborate better with teams, and I also learned time-management skills because I had different tasks throughout the day that needed to get done. I think all of those skill sets are important in any position that I will have in the future.

What was something unexpected that happened during your internship, or resulted because of your internship?

There were constantly celebrities at QVC which was so cool! QVC sells tons of different products on and off the air all day and night, so we got to meet a few different people, such as the Scott brothers, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Brooke Shields. Martha Stewart was also there a ton! It was really awesome because we were all in one building, one community. I think there is a lot to be said for having the studio in the same place as where we were all working each day as well.

What advice or words of wisdom can you share for other students who may be interested in pursuing this internship, or a similar one?

Be confident and do not give up! I actually applied for a QVC internship in my summer going into junior year as well, but I did not get it. I knew that this would be a company I enjoyed and would learn a lot from, so I applied again this year and made sure that I was more prepared. I knew after having more experience, I would be in a better position to send in an application and hopefully get an interview, which I did. During my interview, something I kept telling myself was to be confident. I think that confidence is a great asset to have in any employee because they will be diligent with their work and have faith in themselves to accomplish tasks.

How did you grow as a future professional in this field?

I think after having this internship experience, I really started to feel like an adult. I realized my capabilities and my worth as an individual, which is crucial. I may not know what I want to do post-grad, but I do know that I learned a ton about myself and the workforce through the internship experience at QVC! I’m very grateful I was able to have this opportunity!
